CANTEEN SUPERVISOR / SHIFT-IN-CHARGE
 
The Canteen Supervisor / Shift-in-Charge is responsible for the smooth, safe, and efficient operation of the canteen during their shift. This includes supervising staff and volunteers, ensuring food quality and cleanliness, overseeing cash handling, and delivering a welcoming experience to all guests.
 
You will be the on-duty leader, coordinating both front-of-house (service area) and back-of-house (kitchen and storage), and serving as the main point of contact for concerns during your shift.
 
Key Responsibilities:
Shift Leadership & Coordination
Plan and coordinate daily operations for your shift (staff assignments, preparation and serving times).
Lead and support canteen staff and volunteers, ensuring teamwork and clear communication.
Service Quality & Guest Care
Ensure meals are served on time, in good quality, and in appropriate portions.
Maintain a welcoming, respectful atmosphere for seafarers, families, and guests.
Handle basic inquiries, feedback, and minor complaints, escalating when necessary.
Food Safety, Cleanliness & Safety
Enforce food safety, hygiene, and cleanliness standards in the kitchen and dining areas.
Monitor proper use of equipment and safe working practices.
Ensure cleaning schedules and checklists are followed and documented.
Cash Handling & Documentation
Oversee cashiering and basic sales reports at the end of the shift.
Check and sign daily forms (inventory updates, temperature logs, incident reports).
Coordination & Reporting
Communicate needs and issues to management (e.g., low stock, equipment problems, staff concerns).
Support simple stock monitoring and coordination with purchasing staff.
Basic Qualifications:
Graduate of business or hospitality management courses
At least 2 years of experience in food service, canteens, cafeterias, or restaurants; some experience in a lead or supervisory role preferred
Basic knowledge of food safety, hygiene, and customer service
Able to lead a small team, organize tasks, and remain calm during busy periods
Honest, reliable, and willing to work shifts, weekends, and feast days as needed
Comfortable with basic math and simple reporting (e.g., daily sales, petty cash, checklists)
