What are the duties of a Learner Affairs Specialist? You will sometimes be given the goal of developing programming, advising student organizations and student leaders and conducting research to meet the needs of the whole student - physical, emotional and mental. Challenges in meeting this goal include the budget, staffing of students at colleges and universities.
Other job duties can include, but are not limited to:
- Academic advising (program guidance, online learning transition assistance, enrollment, etc.)
- Counseling (helping learners persist in their program, handling learner conduct-related issues, etc.)
- Customer service (handling complex queries in relation to university policies and programs)
- Academic progress monitoring (proactive monitoring and outreach to learners)
- Communication (email, call, and chat with learners on a daily basis)
- Administrative (enrollment, program coordination, etc.)
- Building learner relationships and provide mentoring to help them remain engaged and successfully complete their academic programs
- Providing direct, comprehensive program guidance to assigned learners
- Monitoring learners' general academic progress according to university policies
- Maintaining regular communication with learners according to university protocol
- Tracking learner participation to meet benchmark goals throughout each term
- Using multiple technology tools in supporting academic advising operations such as NEO LMS, Microsoft Suite, Freshdesk, PowerBI
- Assisting learners in their academic planning and progress from orientation to graduation
- Communicating with each assigned learner weekly on a personalized basis; intervening as necessary to assist those learners having difficulty, and completing required university reports on their academic status
- Providing exceptional customer service by responding to emails and phone calls with a resolution of all service needs within set deadlines
- Serving as the learners' advocate in resolving matters of difficulty, misunderstanding, or confusion within the university
Required experience and education:
- 3 years of professional experience in academic advising and/or student affairs
- Experience with a direct customer service role is a plus
- Experience with working in an international organization is a plus
- Bachelor's degree in a related field
- Degree related to education and counseling is a plus
- Proactive - The role requires plenty of communication outreaches to learners to keep them engaged in their studies and on track in their academic programs.
- Empathetic problem-solver - The role also entails handling distraught learners as they adjust to online learning and experience challenges along the way.
- Critical and analytical thinker - The role needs someone who can use logic and make reasonable judgments in a given situation as it stands with university policies.
The Learner Success team operates on a 24/7 basis as Learner Affairs Specialists play a big role in learner retention.
