OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME
The Division of Healthy Environments and Populations works to support countries to take sustained, systematic and effective action to reduce common risk factors for noncommunicable diseases and conditions (including injuries), address health risks caused by environmental factors, and support WHO stakeholders and countries to address the social and commercial determinants of health, in particular gender and inequity.
Social Determinants of Health (SDH), including Equity and Social Determinants (ESD), Violence and Injury Prevention (VIP), and Alcohol (ALC)
To support Member States in championing health beyond the health sector to create healthy and safe communities where people can live productive lives with equal opportunities to thrive. Within the framework of SDH and the sustainable development goals (SDGs), the unit supports countries and Western Pacific Regional Office colleagues with the application of a gender equity lens to their everyday work, with emphasis placed on addressing the needs of populations living in vulnerable situations. The unit supports Member States in addressing the social and commercial determinants of health including that of harmful use of alcohol as well as promoting multisectoral action to prevent and reduce the health impacts of violence and injuries, particularly related to road traffic crashes, drowning and interpersonal violence.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
The incumbent will drive activities towards reducing the burden of violence and injuries in the Western Pacific Region and assist the Member States in reducing harmful use of alcohol.
Under the supervision and guidance of the Coordinator, SDH, and the Division Director, and in collaboration with relevant units, the incumbent will perform the following duties: * To assess country situation and initiate interventions that would raise awareness on violence and injury prevention, and to establish joint efforts with Member States, international partners, other United Nations (UN) agencies, and nongovernmental organizations in promoting and strengthening violence and injury prevention particularly road traffic safety, falls prevention and drowning prevention;
To monitor, supervise and coordinate the implementation of comprehensive projects, programmes and plans in line with regional, national and subnational strategies, which would resolve priority issues pertaining to violence and injury prevention by carrying out activities in collaboration with local stakeholders to facilitate the exchange of experience among groups and localities with similar concerns;
To liaise with intersectoral counterparts within Member States (i.e. police, transport, social welfare) and, where appropriate, nongovernmental organizations, international partner agencies and other organizations in the programmes of violence and injury prevention in needs assessment and situation analysis; formulation of national plans of action or strategies; implementation of training programmes; and development of promotional materials;
To assist in resource mobilization efforts to support the development and implementation of the regional programme on violence and injury prevention;
To support the implementation and evaluation of high-impact intervention to reduce the harmful use of alcohol with the goal of minimizing the negative health outcomes associated with alcohol use;
To initiate and support advocacy activities to raise awareness for reducing harmful use of alcohol; and
To perform other duties, as required.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Essential: University degree in medicine, public health or social sciences from a recognized institution.
Desirable: Master's degree in public health, social sciences or related discipline from a recognized institution.
Experience
Essential: At least five years of relevant experience including international exposure in public health policy development, implementation and evaluation and establishing intersectoral partnership. At least two years of experience in injury prevention, violence prevention and/or reduction of harmful use of alcohol programme and/or any other programmes related to healthy environment.
Desirable: Minimum one year of experience working in low- or middle-income countries or experience of working with WHO or other UN agencies.
Skills
Good knowledge of public health perspective of violence and injury prevention particularly: drowning prevention, road safety, falls prevention and prevention of violence against children;
Good knowledge and skills in development and implementation of violence and injury prevention policies, plans and programmes; and
Familiarity with WHO violence and injury prevention programme and its programme on alcohol.

REMUNERATION
WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 62,692 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 2518 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
