Currently we are looking for a capable and independent individual for the following position as part of the multi-disciplinary team in Manila office.
Arup's International Development (ID) team works exclusively with Organisations committed to improving social well-being and reducing vulnerability; mostly in developing countries. Our clients and partners include international donors, non-governmental agencies and foundations. Three years ago, ID established a team within Arup East Asia in order to work more closely with our clients in the Asia Region to promote sustainable and resilient development.
We work across multiple projects and programmes in South and South East Asia with a range of clients and partners, including International Finance Institutions, UN Agencies, and Non-Government Organisations. Our key focus areas include sustainable and resilient urban development, infrastructure, climate change adaptation, knowledge management and capacity development.
We are seeking to appoint a Senior Climate and Environment Consultant who is a good team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills as a permanent member of the Arup's International Development Group. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing projects as well as working in a team to provide strategic advice and/or technical expertise on projects in developing country contexts which focus on climate change, sustainable development, and resilience for communities, cites and infrastructure.
The candidate will also play an active role in business development, developing proposals for new work as part of a growing team.
Scope and Responsibilities:
Responsible as Project Manager on small to medium sized projects under the supervision of the Project Director in the development or humanitarian context - coordinating inputs from many different people/specialists, and working closely with key stakeholders to deliver innovative and appropriate solutions within tight budgets and timescales.
Monitoring budgets and controlling expenditure using Arup's financial systems.
Ensuring Arup Management Systems (Quality Assurance) procedures are adhered to.
Allocating tasks to team members, monitoring progress, coordinating inputs and ensuring quality outputs.
Contributing technical skills to consultancy projects and research focusing on climate change adaptation, environmental management, sustainable development, and resilience of infrastructure, cities or communities.
Establishing new projects and projects plans, including financial planning.
Authoring official project documents (for internal or external use).
Responsible for checking the quality and accuracy of own and others' work, working under minimal supervision.
Managing own time and that of others in order to meet project deadlines and deliverables. Ability to juggle many different conflicting demands and priorities.
Contributing to the business development of the Group.
Assisting in preparation of marketing information and bid documents.
Capture and disseminate best practice guidance and learning internally and externally.
This will include representing the team/group/profession/discipline at external meetings.
Responsible for the performance and development of other team members, providing guidance, training and motivational and directional feedback.
Work Environment
The team is based in the Manila office however the position can be based in any of our Southeast Asia offices. It will involve travel to project locations up to 30% of the time.
Qualifications:
Degree qualified in Geography, Environmental Science or similar.
Relevant professional qualification, and/or post-graduate qualification is preferred (e.g. international development, DRR, sustainability or climate change).
Knowledge and circa 5 years' technical experience such as: undertaking climate change vulnerability and risk assessments; developing sustainability, resilience, or climate adaptation strategies; delivering environmental risk/impact assessment.
Knowledge and circa 2 years' experience delivering stakeholder consultation and engagement, including in developing country contexts.
Strong understanding of the development sector and experience working for a development organisation, consultancy or local/ national government in a developing country is desirable.
Strong interest in working with cities and infrastructure.
Experience working in a multi-disciplinary environment.
Appreciation of generalist consulting skills (project management, facilitation, interpretation) and willingness to advance these skills to ensure the best support is provided to our clients.
Experience managing projects or keys areas within a project.
Excellent planning and organisational skills. The ability to prioritise tasks, work under pressure and meet strict deadlines is essential.
Ability to demonstrate commercial awareness.
Ability to independently undertake project analyses and report on results.
Knowledge and experience of quantitative and qualitative research methods.
Experience in effective technical supervision of junior team members.
Understanding of "customer" needs (both internal and external) and issues which may impact on maintaining effectiveness within a commercial environment.
Able to quickly develop and maintain successful client and team relationships.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, particularly in cross-cultural environments; ability to speak other languages is beneficial
Excellent written communication skills. Able to demonstrate strong technical writing skills, preferably including peer reviewed publications.
