Medical billing specialists are responsible for organizing and maintaining patient health information in both electronic and hard copies. They learn and use a variety of coding systems to sort and maintain patient medical data and history of treatment for various uses such as insurance reimbursement and inclusion in databases and registries.
Job Responsibilities
Reviews medical record documentation to ensure the complete coding of all relevant procedures, diagnoses, and modifiers for billing, primarily Chronic care management
Contacts physicians and other health care professionals as needed
Assigns and sequences diagnoses and procedures in accordance with advice from and ICD-9-CM or ICD-10-CM Official Coding Guidelines, CPT Assistant, Physician at Teaching Hospital Rules and Evaluation and Management Documentation Guidelines
Serves to maximize practice revenues by complying with appropriate coding and billing rules
Organize, plan, and coordinate activities for coding and revenue capture for assigned sites
Serves as a resource to the practice sites for coding, revenue cycle, and billing. or designated liaison to obtain diagnosis information required for coding and billing
Performance of other duties as assigned
Performs charge entry functions as appropriate for assigned providers/practice(s)
Coordinates and ensures that all charges (including out-of-office locations) are posted
Performs charge entry functions as appropriate for assigned Providers
Maintains current knowledge of ICD-9-CM or ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems and maintains coding credential certification and maintains HIM and/or coding certification credential with AHIMA or AAPC
Contribute toward achieving the team goals
Required Skills & Experience
Has experience with Internal Medicine (Preferred but not required)
Associate or Bachelor's degree in health information technology (or related field) or equivalent experience
Prefer 1-2 years coding/billing experience defined as coding knowledge and experience with ICD-9 and 10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Solid coding knowledge and skills
Attention to detail (such as interpretation of clinical data including medical terminology)
Analytical skills for abstracting of clinical data
Ability to interpret regulatory and payer rules and directives concerning coding
Solid computer skills and knowledge
Solid Organizational skills
Demonstrates ability to establish and maintain effective personal relationships
Ability to handle stressful situations
Ability to function in a high-volume environment producing quality work
Solid interpersonal and telephone communication skills
Ability to consistently work independently and problem solve
Holds at least one of the following AAPC or AHIMA coding credentials: CPCCCS-PCCSCPC-A/CCA
Demonstrates tact and good judgment
Mature, motivated, decisive, and flexible
Professional demeanor
Ability to work in a diverse professional population
Must be able to multi-task and prioritize job responsibilities
