Overview
DreamHost's Database Engineer's role is to design, install, monitor, maintain databases while ensuring high levels of data availability. This individual is also responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing database policies and procedures to ensure the integrity and availability of databases and their accompanying software.
Responsibilities
Work with development and engineering staff to develop database schemas as required by projects
Implement redundant systems, policies, and procedures for disaster recovery and data archiving to ensure effective protection and integrity of data assets
Ensure database systems perform reliably
Help out with design of all aspects of data architecture, including data models, data flows, aggregations, clustering, replication
Be proficient in different types backup and recovery strategies (like mysqldump, mydumper, xtrabackup)
Integrate copies of tables from disparate sources for analytical use.
Respond to and resolve database access and performance issues
Implement improvements for slow queries such as partitioning, indexing, query rewrites
Monitor, optimize and allocate physical data storage for database systems
Implement checks for monitoring mysql databases and their hosts
Plan and coordinate data migrations between systems
Manage MySQL on Linux in Production/QA/Development environments utilizing open source technologies
Support system administrators and developers to ensure optimal system design
Be part of 24x7 on call rotation
5 years of experience with MySQL
Proficient in SQL
Experience with Linux system administration
Experience with Linux virtualization technology (KVM, VServer, LXC)
Experience with data warehousing technologies (Clickhouse or similar)
Experience with managing databases in cloud is a plus (GCP, AWS or similar)
Ability to write scripts to support database administration activities
Understanding of system administration fundamentals in a Linux environment
Ability to prioritize and multitask
Willingness to learn new technologies and maintain industry knowledge
Some experience with configuration management systems, specific experience with Ansible is a plus
Beginner level Perl, Python Ruby and/or Bash scripting experience
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or similar, or equivalent experience
