The primary responsibility of Senior Software Engineer is to develop software solutions in accordance with assigned projects and sprint goal. Senior Software Engineer also works closely with the Technical Manager and Project Manager/Scrum Master towards backlog and user story refinement. Senior Software Engineer shall have deep and mature understanding of complete software development life cycle and shall possess demonstrable ability to work independently. He/she is also a primary contributor in designing, coding, testing, debugging, documenting and supporting all types of applications consistent with established specifications and business requirements to deliver business value.
Primary Responsibilities:
Analyze Application/System Designs
Reviews and fully understands application/system designs
Demonstrates understanding of application architecture (e.g., DB2, COBOL) and how the design integrates with it
Adheres to applicable enterprise development methodologies and processes (e.g., AGILE processes)
Anticipates design scalability and ensures inclusion in application/system designs
Ensures that application/system designs are clearly and comprehensively documented, understood and traceable back to business requirements (e.g., requirements traceability matrix)
Performs and participates in all required design reviews (e.g., peer reviews, business/partner reviews)
Design/Define Technical Specifications/Design Documents
Develops technical specifications/design documents as defined in application/system designs
Ensures compliance with application code standards (e.g., COBOL, DB2)
Ensures scaling capability
Ensures that technical specifications/design documents are clearly and comprehensively documented, understood and traceable to the application/system design (e.g., traceability matrix)
Adheres to applicable enterprise development methodologies and processes (e.g., AGILE processes)
Demonstrates understanding of applicable data models and enterprise data standards
Works with database teams to evaluate and establish applicable database technical requirements
Identifies applicable Design Patterns for use in technical specifications/design documents
Accounts for applicable security requirements in technical specifications/design documents
Optimizes user experience/interface design
Ensures technical compliance with applicable operating systems
Ensures that technical specifications/design documents optimize application/systems performance (e.g., use of appropriate keys, indexes)
Ensures appropriate integration/interface with applicable partner specifications/design documents
Develop/Enhance/Integrate Applications and Systems
Develops application/system code as defined in technical specifications
Creates unit test plans, executes unit testing and documents results to ensure that code works as designed
Ensures that application/system code is clearly and comprehensively developed and traceable back to technical specifications (e.g., traceability matrix)
Incorporates scaling capability into application/system code as applicable
Ensures integration with testing groups (e.g., UAT, CTP)
Conducts all required reviews (e.g., code coverage, code reviews, test plan reviews), as applicable
Adheres to applicable enterprise development methodologies and processes
Implements Design Patterns, as applicable
Review and troubleshoot potential coding issues
Validates technical compliance application/system designs
Support Testing of Applications/Systems
Demonstrates clear understanding of how the application may be impacted in all aspects of the testing process (e.g., regression testing)
Analyzes/fixes defects identified in testing (e.g., root cause analysis)
Partners with applicable groups (e.g., QA) to review and provide feedback on testing scenarios
Identifies scenarios that may require regression testing, and communicate to appropriate testing groups (e.g., QA)
Works with Infrastructure Services to resolve issues identified in specific testing environments
Provides testing documentation to applicable groups (e.g., release notes, change requests, use cases)
Deploy and Maintain Applications/Systems
Gathers/reviews business requirements
Demonstrates understanding of applicable business processes and how they add value to the business
Demonstrates understanding of application architecture (e.g., DB2, CL, COBOL) and how business logic integrates with it
Evaluates and drives new project development
Adheres to applicable enterprise development methodologies and processes (e.g., UDP, RSA, ADR, EPMO processes)
Anticipates future business models/needs and ensures inclusion in business requirements
Ensures that business requirements are clearly and comprehensively documented and understood, and properly implemented (including integration with IT and business partners)
Ensures that non-functional business requirements are clearly defined (e.g., SLAs, performance requirements, performance guarantees)
Evaluates security requirements obtained from business partners (e.g., functional and technical access)
Evaluates control requirements obtained from business partners (e.g., batch controls)
Works with configuration/release management to develop release plans that ensure proper applications deployment
Ensures that the deployment process is fully documented and compliant with all operational requirements for the application/system
Communicates and ensures full understanding of application/system changes to applicable groups, in order to facilitate ongoing application stability
Participates in the application deployment process, as needed
Provides ongoing expertise to operational support groups (e.g., Systems Support) in order to address identified application problems/issues, as requested
Triages defects identified by operational support groups (e.g., Systems Support) for remediation and inclusion in future application/system releases
Ensures that operational documentation is updated to include system maintenance/update changes
Ensures that system maintenance/updates adhere to security standards

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience
5 - 7+ years IT experience in a software development environment
Experience in system design and building secure distributed applications
Proven analysis, design, and programming experience
Prior experience in project management
Strong technical knowledge in COBOL, AS400 and related technologies
Ability to understand database structures and be able to manipulate, extract, and update data
Possess excellent written and oral communication skills
Ability to follow and adhere to UnitedHealthcare programming standards
Ability to quickly analyze requirements and recommend multiple solutions with pros and cons
Ability to see the big picture and the impact of changes to all parts of the system. Ability to quickly code and test the changes
As a technical resource, ability to mentor junior programmers on how to improve their technical skills
