Job Purpose
TTC-GRC manages the largest and most diverse collections of rice genetic resources. It is mandated to preserve, characterize, maintain and distribute seeds and information of these valuable genetic resources. The position will significantly contribute in the project related to the field crop establishment, care and maintenance, supervision of service providers and hands on activities both in the field and laboratory, data collection of rice characters, preparation of various experimental materials and in-charge of the harvested seeds.
The main purpose of this position is to support the activities of the EGWAS project. Under the general supervision of the Senior Associate Scientist and Assistant Scientist, the RTIII is responsible for establishing, overseeing and monitoring of field nursery/screenhouse experiments, and provide support in the over-all seed management activities of the team.
This position will be based at the IRRI Headquarters, Los Baños, Philippines and may only be filled by permanent citizens of the Philippines.
Roles and Responsibilities
Lead the day-to-day operation of activities in the assigned area of responsibility (maintenance operation of experiment)
Support activities related to withdrawal of seeds for various purposes including distributing to partners/collaborators, for field and screenhouse studies and for genotyping
Perform morphological characterization of all entries in the experiment at different crop stages and post-harvest
Coordinate with data management group for uploading from tablet and or retrieving necessary information for verification or other required arrangement/modification needed in the android tablet for proper data recording
Provide assistance to laboratory activities
Supervise and handle leaf sampling for genotyping, panicle sampling, inventory and storage
Prepare materials to be used in field nursery and experiments (soil, fertilizer, data sheets and labels)
Oversee, implement and monitor field activities (such as land preparation, levee repair, clearing, field layout, seeding, transplanting, replanting, application of fertilizer, irrigation, pulling, threshing, bagging, sampling and harvesting) and ensure that all operations meet standards of quality assurance
Perform post-harvest processes such as threshing, seed blowing, weighing, loading to drying room, packaging and seed authentication
Collect, record, compile, encode, check and proofread data
Collect panicle samples and recording information to be taken at maturity such as shattering and leaf senescence
Ensure compliance with SOP
Qualifications
Minimum of 2 years college education with 3 years experience in agricultural research
Skills Required
Mandatory
Has experience on rice culture in the field
Has basic knowledge in MS Office programs such as Word and Excel or related software
Has experience in biological data collection using gadgets or tablets and portable printers
Preferred
Has experience in rice field experimentations, field data collection of rice characterization, yield evaluation, seed processing and seed preparation
Basic skill of plant part sample collection for genotyping and characterization
Professional driving license
