Job Purpose
Under the general supervision of the assistant scientist, perform activities related to seed processing, including seed cleaning and checking envelope labels. Pack seed, arrange packed seed and assist the lead technician in checking corresponding trays and storage areas. Assist in seed withdrawal, prepare and count samples for viability testing, repack and return bulk samples to original location. Select and pre-pack seeds to facilitate seed request. Maintain cleanliness of lab materials, equipment and work area.
This position will be based at the IRRI Headquarters, Los Baños, Philippines and may only be filled by permanent citizens of the Philippines.

Roles and Responsibilities
Perform activities related to seed processing
Conduct seed viability testing activities
Conduct activities related to seed request
Provide timely, consistent and accurate information to direct supervisor to ensure that objectives and SOPs are followed
Support the training of scholars and on-the-job trainees as required
Ensure proper maintenance and organization of the seed laboratory including lab materials and equipment as required by the institute protocols maintaining cleanliness, orderliness and safety in the work spaces, proper storage and observe proper laboratory waste and disposal procedures
Perform activities related to seed processing (i.e. verify seed samples before starting selection activities, perform seed selection, final drying, moisture testing and prepare all packing containers, pack seeds, arrange packed seeds and record corresponding trays and storage areas and assist in the authentication of newly harvested samples for selection) to support the day-to-day operations of the genebank
Conduct seed viability testing activities (i.e, seed withdrawal, prepare and count samples, repack and return bulk samples to original location, perform breaking dormancy and set-up viability testing)
Conduct activities related to seed request (i.e. proofreading of the list of requested accessions against the original seed list, seed withdrawal, pre-packing of stored seeds to facilitate seed request preparation and returning samples to their original location, consolidating, and proofreading of prepared samples prior to release thru barcoding, assigning sequence number for outside IRRI request)
Prepare planting materials for field and screen house activities (i.e. identification of source and withdrawal of seeds, consolidation of planting materials, assignment of plot numbers to the prepared materials and proofreading)
Execute seed inventory by monitoring seed availability of materials in store and identifying and recommending materials for rejuvenation
Assist in the preparation of duplicate samples for safety back-up at the National Center for Genetic Resources Preservation in Fort Collins, Colorado, USA and in Svalbard, Norway
Perform other duties that may be assigned from time to time
Qualifications
High school graduate with 2 (two) year relevant work experience
Skills Required
Mandatory
Has basic knowledge of MS Office programs such as Word and Excel or related software
Preferred
Has experience in rice production
