Job Purpose
The Cross Cutting Operations Cluster will ensure the delivery of standardized field and screenhouse operations across IRRI research platforms as well as the delivery of internal labor resources to support research and operations. This position will be part of the Pooled Manpower Resource and will be deployed to IRRI research groups to execute routine field and laboratory operations.
This position will be based at the IRRI Headquarters, Los Baños, Philippines and may only be filled by permanent citizens of the Philippines.
Current IRRI staff are encouraged to apply and will be prioritized.
Roles and Responsibilities
As part of the Pooled Manpower Resource group, execute routine field, screen house, greenhouse and laboratory operations including field preparation and maintenance, crop management, plant sampling as well as harvest and post-harvest seed processing
Perform basic field and laboratory experimental activities (i.e. pollination, emasculation, seed germination, processing and storage, plant sample collection for DNA extraction) ensuring compliance to IRRI SOPs, guidelines and protocols
Perform routine field, screen house and greenhouse operations including experiment preparation, maintenance, crop management, plant sampling, harvest and post-harvest seed processing to support requests related to the Rice Hybridization Service and assisting support to the Trait Introgression Pipeline (TIP) experiments and Modified Field Nursery ensuring compliance to IRRI SOPs, guidelines and protocols
Maintain a safe and efficient working environment through reporting all incidents, near misses and suggesting possible solutions in order to improve operations and systems
Provide timely, consistent and accurate information to direct supervisor/requestor to ensure smooth flow of research activities (i.e. availability and purchase of supplies, presence of pest and diseases for immediate pesticide application) and that research objectives and SOPs are followed
Support scholars, students, researchers and scientists in establishing field experiments
Provide support to requestors in facilitating their material transfer requests
Prepare materials and lay-out and ensure proper maintenance of the experiment operations, as required by the institute and government protocols including maintenance of storage and preparation of supplies, property and material inventory, cleanliness, orderliness and safety, preparation of commonly used fertilizers and chemicals as well as waste disposal
Under close supervision of the lead, operate machinery and equipment to deliver service and experimental support as per request
Collect data and ensure correct encoding on the assigned database
Operate project vehicle to transport staff and supplies to and from the field
Qualifications
High school graduate with 2 (two) years of relevant work experience
Skills Required
Mandatory
Has basic knowledge of MS Office programs such as Word and Excel or related software
Has experience in rice production
Preferred
Has knowledge in some basic field, screenhouse/greenhouse, and or laboratory works and equipment
Has experience in performing automated data collection/entry
