Optum, part of the UnitedHealth Group family of businesses, is looking to hire an Occupational Health and Safety (EHS) professional in the role of Consultant. This individual contributor will inspect, test, and evaluate workplace environments, equipment, and practices to ensure that they follow safety standards and government regulations, and engage employees and staff in programs that ensure safe practices in the workplace. This role requires certification and/or completed training and hands-on experience in conducting and participating in government inspections and implementing programs that adhere to laws and regulations governing environmental protection, employee health and safety. The role requires internal stakeholder relationship management and knowledge of specific laws and inspection procedures.
The primary goal of this role will be to maintain strategies that ensure enterprise programs are aligned and compliant with applicable regulatory requirements, industry trends, and evolving business needs. Optum's Enterprise Occupational Health & Safety program includes the following categories that aim to protect our employees and the environment in which we work.
Primary Responsibilities:
Emergency Preparedness and Response: Bi-annual emergency evacuation drills and first aid training in partnership with the Philippine Red Cross or its accredited partners to prepare employees to respond in a safe and effective manner in an emergency or disaster situation
Environmental Management, Hazardous Materials and Waste: Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) ensures enterprise activities are conducted in compliance with applicable regulations; Candidate will discharge the functions of Pollution Control Officer (PCO) that will handle quarterly hazardous waste reporting requirements, transport and disposal, as required by the Philippine Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)
Ergonomics: Coordinate with the Optum Real Estate team in reducing physical stress and fatigue by ensuring that furniture and equipment are set up to support neutral body postures and create awareness of enterprise programs suitable for the Optum work environment
General Safety: Implement programs that prevent occupational illness and injury and comply with reportorial requirements of the Philippine Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on work accidents and illnesses
Occupational Health: Ensure the work environment complies with Enterprise Occupational Health programs and applicable national and local Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards and regulations; identify gaps and lead efforts to remediate
Inspect, test, and evaluate workplace environment, such as lighting, equipment, materials, and ventilation to ensure they follow safety standards and government regulations, and prepare written reports on findings
Evaluate programs on workplace health and safety, and design and implement workplace processes and procedures that help protect employees and that comply with the requirements of the PH DOLE Bureau of Working Conditions
Educate employees about workplace safety by preparing and providing training programs; demonstrate the correct use of safety equipment
Investigate incidents and accidents to identify what caused them and how they might be prevented; prepare report with remediation measures to Human Capital
Examine the workplace for environmental or physical factors that could affect employee health, safety, comfort, and performance
Establish and maintain strategic relationships with key stakeholders and cross functional partners to drive operational and technological strategies
Lead interactions with regulators, auditors and independent risk management for audits/examinations
Work with regulatory functions to stay well-informed of industry best practices
Comply with the terms and conditions of the employment contract, company policies and procedures, and any and all directives (such as, but not limited to, transfer and/or re-assignment to different work locations, change in teams and/or work shifts, policies in regards to flexibility of work benefits and/or work environment, alternative work arrangements, and other decisions that may arise due to the changing business environment). The Company may adopt, vary or rescind these policies and directives in its absolute discretion and without any limitation (implied or otherwise) on its ability to do so
Required Qualifications:
Philippine Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) trained Safety Officer, Certified Safety Professional, or Certified Industrial Hygienist with experience in participating in compliance audits and responding with remediation measures
Bachelor's degree in occupational health and safety, or a related scientific or technical field such as engineering
10+ years of prior relevant experience on health and safety management with leading large corporation
Demonstrated experience partnering with senior leaders and business leaders
Technical knowledge and practical experience in all the following domains: Physical security/safety infrastructure, incident/accident response and management, occupational health and safety
Proven track record of sound decision-making, taking ownership, and delivering results in a leadership role
Ability to dive deep into data, existing processes, people, and technology challenges in order to identify risks and opportunities
Adept at working in a fast-paced performance-driven culture
Ability to solve for unsafe working conditions and environmental concerns in the workplace with the ability to communicate safety instructions and concerns to managers, employees and technical staff
Ability to collaborate and build relationships across a highly matrixed enterprise
