REPORTING LINES
The Database Developer role sits within the Engineering team and reports directly to the Solution Architect.
POSITION OBJECTIVE
The Database developer position is responsible for ensuring the company's stability, maintainability, and quality of database and reporting solutions.
Database developers work closely with the Business analysts and Tester roles to ensure the database/reporting changes being produced are of high quality and meet the business's functional and non-functional requirements.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
New ways of working
Participate in quarterly planning, release, and sprint planning to plan and manage the development team's activities in support of business systems roadmap.
Track process against sprint goals with reporting and in sprint retrospective meetings.
Database design
Working with the development team design databases to support the business functional and non-functional requirements.
Ensure all database designs are properly documented and signed off by solution architect.
Ensure database documentation is made available to members of the development team.
Database development
Working with developers, implement database designs including relevant documentation.• Make recommendations on cloud infrastructure to support performance requirements.
Provide support to developers around SQL queries, stored procedures and similar.• Provide support for tuning and performance of databases.
Database support
Maintain existing databases including:
Performance tuning and issue resolution.
Data maintenance includes back-end data fixes to support production changes. All changes should be logged in Jira for change management purposes.
Correction of EDI failures in the database environment.
DevOps
Working with the development team to create and maintain scripting/procedures to manage database deployments to ensure all environments remain versioned, in sync, and current.
Ensure all database environments have adequate resourcing and are performing in line with performance requirements.
Working with the development team, provision new database environments and test data where required to support the development process.
Ensure appropriate database monitoring and relevant escalations are in place to cater for database issues. Ensure these metrics are tracked and displayed via dashboards.
Reporting
Support the business with data extracts from production systems when requested.
Develop and maintain Tableau reports depending on business requirements.
General
Work to all (reasonable) deadlines as prescribed by your manager.
Perform any general tasks as directed by your manager.
Requirements
Mandatory
5+ years' experience as a Database admin/developer/data engineer or similar working within a software development team.
2+ years' experience working with Agile or similar development methodologies.
Strong experience in working with PostgreSQL, MySQL or equivalent.
Strong experience in relational database design.
Strong experience in ETL process and tooling.
Strong experience in working with Reporting tools Tableau, PowerBI, Business Objects or similar.
Experience in working with cloud technologies: AWS (preferred), Azure, GCP.
Experience in database development and tuning.
Excellent analytical skills.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Strong time management and organizational skills.
A strong desire and ability to learn.
Computer Science or related degree.
Knowledge of application and database design.
Experience performing unit testing.
Desirable
Freight / Logistics domain experience.
Knowledge of Jira / Confluence or similar tools is highly regarded.
