We are looking for a Communications Manager to tell our story to authors across new and existing channels. As a member of the Marketing Communications Team, you will craft messages for company-wide initiatives on topics such as open access and open science, reproducibility, inclusion and diversity and sustainability. You will ensure that STMJ has a clear voice when communicating with researchers and stay up to date on news, events and trends which are important to authors.. The ideal candidate is organized, cares about details, asks the right questions, and has some experience with academic audiences.
Who we are
The Science, Technology and Medical Journals (STMJ) department in Elsevier is responsible for publishing over 2650 academic journals across a range of subject areas. Within STMJ, the Marketing Communications Team sits centrally within the STMJ Marketing department, adopting data-driven strategies to build author-centric campaigns. The team is responsible for the marketing and communication of projects which over-arch all subject areas within STMJ. We work to strengthen the connection between the research community and Elsevier, to promote Elsevier as a trusted publishing partner and as an indirect result of this pursuit, increase the volume and quality of submissions received. Our activities typically aim to increase brand awareness and improve author perception of Elsevier. This includes overseeing campaigns which promote institutional agreements, illustrate Elsevier's open access options and raise awareness of Elsevier wide initiatives which cover topics such as inclusion and diversity and sustainability.
Your responsibilities
Play a role in developing communications strategies to promote business priorities (e.g., open access, inclusion & diversity, reproducibility, sustainability, etc.). You will be responsible for ensuring the message resonate with authors and remains loyal to our corporate narrative
Help craft the message for drumbeat communications campaigns (e.g., open access week, peer review week, SDG event days, PRIDE month, etc.) and develop an understanding of the most effective ways to connect with the research community.
Create content (written and visual) for updates to pages on Elsevier.com
Develop internal resources, FAQs and guiding documents to increase the understanding of STMJs marketing activities among internal and external stakeholders. This may be through updates to Confluence pages, news sharing on our Team's channel, writing copy for news updates or the creation of PowerPoint decks etc
Act as an STMJ representative when meeting with colleagues across the business to sync internal messaging and coordination of communication strategy's
Support the team as required as part of wider communications campaigns. We're looking for a team player who can identify new opportunities and contribute to a growing team.
What you should bring
3+ years' related experience in communications, journalism or public relations. Ideally you have an affinity with or experience in the STM Publishing industry and/or an understanding of how academic journal publishing works.
Bachelor's degree minimum in Communication, Media or Science Communication (or equivalent)
Excellent written and oral communication skills utilizing proficient written and spoken English. You can create high quality content (written and visual) for a variety of platforms including email, social media and our website.
Strong editing and proofreading skills with an eye for detail and a talent for communicating complex ideas simply
A self-starter attitude who is highly organised and takes excellent notes. You are communicative and diplomatic by nature and enjoy digging into the finer details within a project.
The ability to work in a global team, working both independently and collaboratively.
