Financial Accountant Role Description
An Australian family office is seeking an accounting professional to run the day-to-day finance function and report to the part-time CFO. The volume of transactions is relatively low for the organization so the bookkeeping and accounts receivable roles are only -15-20% of the total time. The family office is a small team of 3 dedicated employees, located in Australia.
Responsibilities:
Bookkeeping (-10-20% of role)
Entering and coding transactions into Xero accounting software for all family office entities
Reconciling the bank statement in Xero from bank feeds and manual data entry
Preparing Business Activity Statements (BAS) for the Australian Taxation Office (lodgement will be done by the CFO) on a monthly/quarterly basis
Saving and filing investment statements to provide an audit trail of Xero entries
Liaising with and responding to queries from external accountants in preparation of annual tax returns for the family office entities
Provide support to other team members for accounts payable function and adhere to segregation of duties policies
Accounts receivable (-5-10% of role)
Maintain schedule of income from financial assets held (i.e. dividends from publicly listed shares, monthly / quarterly fixed income securities, other private credit investments, etc)
Tracking that all income we are expecting to receive has been paid into the correct family office bank account
Escalate irregularities and variances to the CFO in a timely manner
Financial reporting (-50% of role, majority of workload at end of quarter)
Prepare quarterly financial statements (balance sheet and profit and loss) for each of the family office's entities (approximately 6) and on a consolidated basis
Prepare and maintain balance sheet reconciliations for material accounts including inter-entity loan reconciliations on a quarterly basis
Maintain a register (currently Excel) of the family office's investments, which is revalued on a quarterly basis using internal and external datapoints
Prepare and maintain a quarterly portfolio report showing portfolio allocation and performance
Maintain a high-level rolling forecast of the family office's liquid cash position over time to reflect income from investments, committed capital, capital outflows, and forecast family expenditure
Financial analysis on deals and support for portfolio companies (-20% of role)
Support the investment team with accounting review of investments, as required. This may include reviewing historical financial statements or discrete pieces of financial analysis
Support companies in which the family office has investments with reporting e.g. assisting a company's accountant in preparing financial reports for the board
Conduct ad hoc research on industries or companies to support investment teams as required
Required skills:
Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or similar
Chartered Accountant (CA) or Certified Practicing Accountant (CPA) designation (including evidence of educational transcript, up-to-date membership, and CPD hours)
Strong Microsoft Excel skills including proficiency in maintaining well-structured, formatted, and reviewable workbooks
Proficiency using Xero accounting software including maintaining recurring monthly/quarterly journals
Advanced level of written and verbal fluency in English
At least 8 years experience in an accounting or finance role, with at least 5 years in either a Big 4 accounting firm, multinational corporate or investment company/family office
Desired skills:
Understanding of how private equity and private credit investment structures work (e.g. through capital commitments and calls) and the associated reporting they undertake
Proficiency and experience using Xero and open source apps (i.e. XPNA software (FP&A tool), Hubdoc or similar (automated document reader for accounts payable processing) and other add-on applications as required
Experience with other Microsoft Office suite apps including PowerPoint, Planner, OneDrive, SharePoint
