Job Purpose
Under the general direction of the supervisor, plan and implement research activities related to creating and approach to improve the photosynthetic performance and productivity of rice in diverse environments. Activities include preparation, improvement, and/or development of necessary research tools, data collection, analysis, and interpretation; work closely with collaborating partner(s), exchange information and present research findings through conferences and publications.
This position will be based at the IRRI Headquarters, Los Baños, Philippines and may only be filled by permanent citizens of the Philippines.
Roles and Responsibilities
Assist in designing experiments based on the research outline provided, in the field of molecular biology and plant physiology
Plan and implement experiments related to photosynthesis and water use efficiency
Perform screening of transgenic materials
Develop and optimize protocol for optimizing photosynthesis
Identify and characterize transgenic materials and other rice populations
Develop and validate molecular tools
Genetic analysis, identification of cultivars that have enhance photosynthesis.
Oversee field, screen house and laboratory-based experiments ensuring adherence to research outline, guidelines and protocols in time bound manner
Manage the implementation of experiments and other research studies related to molecular biology and plant physiology
Provide assistance and guidelines/information to scholars and collaborators considering the implementation of experiment(s) including the logistics
Assign, monitor and evaluate research activities/tasks performed by researchers and research technicians; provide guidance when necessary
Maintain smooth conduct of experiment(s) by troubleshooting and fostering a productive teamwork environment
Develop standard operating procedures (SOP)
Consolidate, evaluate and analyze research data; summarize and validate using appropriate statistical tools, and assist in interpretation of results in relation to molecular markers for targeted traits with timely reporting/presentation
Upload, maintain and update B4R and other databases for efficient storage and retrieval of data and information
Assist in the development of annual reports and publications in refereed journals as well as presentations and posters to be used in national and international conferences.
Prepare materials and equipment needed in the experiments and contribute to the verification and application of methods/techniques that would aid in the successful execution of the experiment/activity
Qualifications
Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture Major in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry and 4-5 years relevant work experience in research
Master of Science degree in Agriculture Major in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, and 2-3 years relevant work experience in rice research
Skills Required
Mandatory
Has strong molecular biology skills and knowledgeable in rice transformation, gene cloning and RT-PCR
