Job Purpose
The main purpose of this position is to support the EGWAS project activities. Under the minimal supervision of Senior Scientist, facilitate the planning, designing, and implementation of characterization (environmental, genotypic and phenotypic) of the Genebank collection in field/screenhouse/plant growth facilities. The person will ensure compliance with the Genebank SOPs and also contribute to developing protocols with respect to data gathering, seed processing and management. He/She will also consolidate, evaluate and analyze research data gathered from the different studies and contribute to manuscript for reports/publications as well as presentations/posters for national and international conferences. Supervise, coach and guide scholars, OJTs, researchers and research technicians.
This position will be based at the IRRI Headquarters, Los Baños, Philippines and may only be filled by permanent citizens of the Philippines.
Roles and Responsibilities
Facilitate the planning, designing and implementation of experiments related to allele mining project, including but not limited to data gathering, seed processing and management, and crop management
Ensure compliance with SOPs and meet specific project goals and research objectives
Contribute to the development of research proposals including review of related literature, selection of adequate research tools and equipment, verification of suggested methodologies and establishment of parameters
Constantly communicate with project partners and collaborators to exchange conceptual ideas and to effectively gather feedback and research-related requirements for the advancement of the project
Provide assistance and guidelines to stakeholders considering the implementation of experiments, including logistics
Constantly monitor, evaluate and provide recommendations to improve research activities/tasks performed by Research technicians and Researchers in order to maintain smooth conduct of field and greenhouse experiments as well as to foster a productive working environment
Coordinate with required IRRI services and supplies to ensure smooth implementation of experiments
Consolidate, evaluate and analyze research data gathered from the project trials
Evaluate, validate and contribute to the interpretation of results and to initiate writing of manuscripts for reports/publications as well as presentations/posters for national and international conferences
Prepare and submit updated research outputs and reports to the Senior Scientist in a timely manner
Supervise and lead the maintenance of accurate data recording and update database for efficient storage and retrieval of information
Administer effective coordination and preparations of trainings by ensuring that the training materials, logistical arrangements and resource persons are appropriate to the defined objectives
Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)
Qualifications
Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Biotechnology, Genetics or Plant Breeding and 4 years of relevant work experience in rice research, and data management
Master of Science degree in Genetics or Plant Breeding discipline and 1 year relevant work experience in rice research
Skills Required
Mandatory
Experience in rice research, with good skills in data collection and management
Preferred
Knowledge of cultivated rice diversity, bioinformatics, genetics, geographic information systems (GIS), reporting and publication writing
