Job Description
Accounting staff members have a variety of roles, including:
Staff accountant
Entry- or mid-level accountants who perform day-to-day accounting tasks, such as reconciling accounts, managing transactional data, and preparing and reviewing financial documents. Staff accountants often work for large, publicly traded companies and focus on accrual accounting.
Accounting supervisor
Usually the head of a small accounting team, accounting supervisors verify financial information, prepare internal reports, and create financial documentation. They may also serve as a liaison between customers and the accounting department.
Accounting clerk
Focuses on recording financial transactions, and is well-versed in accounts payable and receivable. Accounting clerks need strong attention to detail for organizing documents and verifying data accuracy.
Accounting assistant
Provides administrative support to one or more accountants. Accounting assistants do not need accounting qualifications and their duties are typically more clerical than financial.
Chief financial officer
An executive-level employee who manages the company's finance and accounting department employees.
