QUALIFICATIONS
• Graduate as B.S Medical Technologist or B.S. Nursing
• Preferably with work experience as Phlebotomist.
• Understanding of proper patient identification methods
• Knowledge of legal requirements pertaining to drawing blood, handling specimen samples, and the use of relevant equipment.
• Experience using effective punctures techniques.
• Knowledge of testing protocols and the use of testing equipment.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Keen attention to detail.
FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Practice proper patient identification, verifies by asking patient's name, especially when working on hospital hours.
2. Develop effective collection techniques as they relate to groups such as pediatric and geriatric patients.
3. Collect blood samples from patients and/or obtains blood specimen by performing venipunctures and fingersticks.
4. Knowledgeable on order of draw of blood in the sample tubes.
5. Label vials with patient names (surname, given name and middle name), date and time of collection.
6. Maintaining specimen integrity by using aseptic technique following laboratory procedures; observing isolation process.
7. Instructs patient's pre and post extraction. Reassure patients and help them relax.
8. Properly labeled each specimen and ensure that every specimen is delivered to the laboratory on time.
9. Track collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting times of collection in the patient's request; maintaining daily tallies of collection performed.
10. Centrifuge blood samples, to notify patient for repeat collection of rejected sample.
11. Maintains safe, secure, and healthy environment by following standards and procedures.
12. Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician, nursing station, or reference laboratory; referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; notifying CMT of unresolved orders.
13. Expect to work in a large number of patients varying in age and health status.
14. Be friendly, courteous and sympathetic when it comes to working with patients
15. Keep your phlebotomy cart or station well-organized at all times.
