MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST
 
SUMMARY:
 
The Medical technologists analyze samples of blood, tissue and body fluids to determine chemical content, cell count, drug levels or blood type; they may also search for specific microorganisms like bacteria or parasites. Preparing the samples for examination, using automated equipment and specialized instrumentation, performing numerous complicated tests simultaneously, and accurately interpreting the results are all part of a medical technologist's job.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs phlebotomy;
Controls and maintains equipment and keeps working area clean;
Reports to the Section Head and Supervisors any significant problems of which he/she becomes aware in daily practice;
Checks performance of internal quality controls to validate the tests;
Helps in the investigation of nonconformities;
Ensures that all laboratory fees have been paid or charged to patient’s account;
Participates in monthly meetings;
Respects the patient’s right to informed consent;
Gives the patient the opportunity to ask questions about the procedure and satisfactorily answers their questions;
Makes aware the approximate fees for the performance of laboratory procedures; and
Performs laboratory tests according to established turnaround times; and
Performs procedures with absolute accuracy and reliability.
