Core Responsibilities
Station Setup (Mise en Place): Prepare and stock the assigned station with all necessary ingredients, sauces, and tools before service begins.
Food Preparation: Perform tasks such as washing, peeling, chopping vegetables, butchering meat, and preparing basic sauces following standardized recipes.
Cooking: Execute various cooking techniques-including grilling, frying, sautéing, roasting, and steaming-to ensure every dish meets quality and temperature standards.
Plating & Garnish: Assemble and garnish dishes according to the Chef's specifications for uniform presentation.
Inventory & Storage: Monitor stock levels, rotate products using FIFO (First In, First Out), and report any shortages to senior staff.
Sanitation & Safety: Maintain a clean workspace and follow all local health department regulations for food handling, storage, and equipment maintenance.
Common Qualifications & Requirements
Experience: Usually requires 1-3 years of experience as a line or prep cook in a professional kitchen.
Education: A high school diploma is standard; a degree or certificate from a Culinary Arts program is often preferred for upscale environments.
Certifications: Most employers require a Food Handler Certificate (e.g., ServSafe).
Physical Stamina: Ability to stand for long shifts (8-10 hours), work in high-heat environments, and lift up to 50 lbs.
Scheduling: Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is almost always necessary.
Key Skills
Technical Skills: Proficient knife handling and mastery of kitchen equipment like grills, fryers, and ovens.
