About the opportunity
Reporting to the Manager of IT Operations team the Server Engineer will be focused on the support and day-to-day operation of Ceridian's server infrastructure. The Server Engineer will work closely with other Technology teams to troubleshoot and resolve issues, build new environments and implement configuration changes to existing environments. Supported server platforms include physical servers, VMware, AWS, MS Azure, RedHat Linux, etc.
What you'll get to do
Installation, configuration, and administration of Linux servers (CentOS, RHEL, and Ubuntu), Windows servers, VMWare vSphere, vCenter, Commvault, servers, desktops, printers, laptops, wireless access points, routers, projectors, screens, and firewalls. This includes physical, virtual and cloud based platforms - troubleshooting, proactive management, security management, backups, daily operation and optimization
Design and maintain efficient data back-up and recovery policies/procedures to ensure business continuity. Develop and maintain a business continuity and disaster recovery plan to ensure 24/7 availability of critical systems and restoration of research data and services in the event of failure of IT. Active Directory and Group Policy management and support.
Provide overall system administration expertise in various platforms to design and implement solutions for challenging research IT problems
Maintain, audit and enhance security system and ensure integrity of housed IT infrastructure
Manages and maintains both network and system level access controls.
Design, create and maintain IT infrastructure documentation. Provide basic system and network support of scientific instrument workstations
Assists in the development, design, and implementation of technology standards and procedures for information systems
Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
Configure and maintain core network services such as DNS, NTP, DHCP, SMTP, etc.
Engages with the team in troubleshooting, performance analysis, installation, maintenance, and user support activities to maximize stability and systems availability
Experience with cloud-based platforms - VMware Cloud on AWS, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Azure
Experience with support and administration of environments with high-availability and disaster recovery technologies
Responsible for monitoring and alerting of systems to ensure the highest level of infrastructure performance
Responsible for ownership and in driving incident and problem issues to resolution internally and with third party vendors
Plan and conduct software upgrades, security patches and operating system updates
Evaluate security posture of existing infrastructure and apply system hardening configurations as necessary
Provides Server support for software development and conducts production application deployments

Skills and Experience we value
A Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent degree and experience
AWS: 2 years (Preferred)
Microsoft Windows Server: 2 years (Preferred)
Linux: 2 years (Preferred)
Experience managing VMWare Cluster environment including Esxi, vSphere and VCenter
Experience managing SAN storage environment
Experience working with Domain controller
Experience working with Linux Network administration and Operating systems
Physically capable to rack/unrack server equipment if needed
Strong knowledge of Microsoft Active Directory Domain Services
Hands-on experience creating and maintaining Group Policy Objects (GPO)
Troubleshooting common OS and networking issues using industry-standard tools
Thorough understanding of network infrastructure, concepts of operation, and protocols (OSI layers, TCP/IP, routing and switching, etc.)
Experience working with managing backups and restores using backup software (ie. Commvault)
Knowledge of installation of MySQL database.
Implementing security controls, infrastructure vulnerability scanning and remediation
Experience in deploying, configuring, and/or using system management and continuous monitoring tools, such as SolarWinds, Nagios, HBSS, Splunk, is a plus
Strong Oral, Written and Presentation Skills; proficiency with workflow and lifecycle management systems (e.g. Atlassian Jira, ServiceNow)
An excellent problem-solver, able to quickly grasp complex systems and identify opportunities for improvement and resolution of critical issues
Ability and strong willingness to learn different new technologies and operate in a heterogeneous technical environment
Ability to document change in procedures, policies in response to changing IT infrastructure and ensure timely customer support
Demonstrated time management and organization skills while working in a fast-paced, multidiscipline team environment
Knowledge of specific network equipment (e.g. Cisco, Palo Alto) and working experience with routing, switching, and firewall configuration is a plus
Scripting proficiency in Bash, PowerShell, Ansible or Python to automate system configuration and administration tasks is a plus
Infrastructure as Code technology: Terraform, CloudFormation is a plus. #LI-Remote
