Job Description
Paralegal - Individual Insurance Legal Team
Manulife is seeking an experienced paralegal to join our Individual Insurance legal team as a paralegal specialist to provide strategic, specialized and cost-effective legal support for matters related to the Individual Insurance and Guaranteed Investment Product business in Canada.
Job Responsibilities
Provide support to the legal needs of the Individual Insurance business area, including:
analyzing and summarizing policy files and internal business client queries
drafting responses/opinions, as required
acting as a key primary contact for internal business clients
outlining key obligations in legislation
analyzing and comparing versions of laws and regulations
researching and determining applicable legislation, jurisprudence, and doctrine
preparing reports
maintaining and organizing files electronically and support of records management.
Handle incoming communication from internal business clients, including on urgent, sensitive, and confidential matters related to the administration of customer files, e.g., estate matters, change of beneficiary questions, power of attorney issues, etc.
Support counsel with the drafting or review of various insurance-related contracts, commercial agreements, and other legal documents such as letters, releases, affidavits, declarations, corporate governance documents etc.
Modify or create new templates for various business units.
Prepare training material and provide training, as applicable, to business client groups and/or other legal team members.
Monitor correspondence from various regulatory bodies, etc.
Monitor case law to identify new decisions relevant to our industry.
Job Requirements (Knowledge/Skills/Competencies):
Paralegal certificate and/or bachelor's degree plus demonstrated experience with law firm or corporate law department required.
Two years experience in a law firm (in commercial or corporate law or insurance) or corporate legal department preferred.
Knowledge of the financial services industry is a plus.
Excellent analytical, interpretive and research skills
Sound, practical judgment in assisting lawyers and business clients
Willingness to learn and become familiar with legal concepts applicable to Individual Insurance
Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
Proven ability to collaborate well with business partners
Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to manage competing and shifting priorities and deliverables in a fast-paced environment
Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
Demonstrated organizational skills
Meticulous attention to detail in all aspects of the job
Excellent knowledge of MS Office products (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, including Office 365), SharePoint, Adobe and Windows
Knowledge of the financial services industry, an asset
