Financial ControllerScrubbed
We are looking for a capable and diligent Financial Controller who will be responsible for all accounting and financial functions. The Financial Controller will also be part of a team that creates and implements policies and processes in order to continue the company's rapid growth trajectory. This includes identifying, resolving, and documenting accounting issues as well as creating procedures to make the financial closing and reporting processes more efficient and accurate.
About our Client:
Our client's business is a fully-licensed depressant drug distributor based in San Francisco located around the corner from Anresco, the city's only licensed testing lab for a depressant drug, and we're positioned in the middle of the supply chain - keeping the business partners compliant and connected.
Distributors have three key regulatory responsibilities:
1) Ensure the safe transport of goods from producers to retailers;
2) Interface with independent labs to quarantine product while testing occurs
3) Collect and remit Excise and Cultivation Taxes to the state on a quarterly basis.
The Distribution/Manufacturing industry is analogous to the liquor industry, which has a three-tier system (Supplier, Wholesaler, and Retailer). The difference is the industry's flexibility in how businesses organize (vertical integration is permitted) and provide services (ex. co-packaging and transformation of goods).
Our client's business also distinguishes itself from industry peers due to its location and focus. Which the only third-party distributor based in San Francisco and focused heavily on the development and implementation of proprietary systems to manage a complex supply chain experiencing rapid growth.
Responsibilities:
Key responsibilities include supervision of billings for services provided, collection of accounts receivable, supervising accounts payable, payroll, monthly reporting for the board and investors, monthly preparation of a forecast, annual preparation of a budget, filing of quarterly tax obligations, annual tax return preparation and all treasury administration.
· You will report directly to the COO and be part of every decision or activity that impacts the company's financial statement.
· The role requires you be onsite at our San Francisco facility, working tactically alongside Sales & Operations, counting cash (literally), preparing supplier payments, interfacing with brands, and assisting HR with payroll administration.
· The Distribution/Manufacturing industry is dynamic and constantly changing, so the demands of the position will evolve accordingly. This role requires you to deliver precise information under strict deadlines, think creatively, multitask, and provide strategic solutions to problems.
· The ideal candidate is someone who will evolve with the role; someone who is continually looking for better ways to manage responsibilities, identifying business efficiencies to ensure cost effectiveness, and finding improvements for building workflows (automating reconciliations, allocations, intra-company eliminations).
Accounting
· Design organizational structure necessary for achieving financial objectives
· Manage daily accounting activities, including reconciliation of cash payments with received payment records in Salesforce accounting system
· Review invoices and ensure accounts payable are paid on time
· Maintain an appropriate accounting control environment
· Prepare and review monthly bank registry reconciliations
· Monitor accounts receivable to ensure timely collection
· Reconcile all inter-organizational accounts
· Maintain schedules and sub-ledgers to support all accounts
· Manage Capital Expenditure spreadsheet, ordering items when necessary Regulatory Compliance
· Maintain corporate filing and payment obligations for all entities
· Remain current on IRS Code Section 280E to mitigate business exposure
· Ensure adoption and compliance with US GAAP
· Oversee and maintain risk management requirements including property insurance, general liability and directors and officers insurance
· Work closely with the COO to understand the nuances of California's Distribution/Manufacturing regulations and how it impacts finances
Payroll
· Review and assist in the preparation of regular and cash payroll
· Ensure the accurate calculation of employee withholdings and their timely remittance
· Maintain adequate employee payroll records and issue required reports and forms
· Oversee the management and administration of benefits and group plans
Financial Reporting
· Prepare month end accruals and adjustments
· Prepare monthly financial statements on an accrual basis for review with management
· Present the monthly financial statements and prepare variance to budget analysis where and when required
· Close books monthly and add to financial reporting package
Budgeting
· Work with the department heads to develop the budgeting process and prepare annual operating plan (AOP)
· Implement and monitor departmental and entity budgets across CAPEX and OPEX as part of AOP
· Assist in the development of short and long range financial projections
Required
· Minimum 5 years' experience as Financial Controller
· Bachelor degree in Accounting/Finance and minimum five (5) years' experience as Controller in Distribution/Manufacturing or equivalent industry
· Certified Public Accountant and/or MBA preferred
· Strong working knowledge of Excel and any related ERP system (Salesforce ideally)
· Bright, eager and willing to do whatever it takes to succeed - individually and in conjunction with the team
· High level of integrity and honesty
