POSITION OVERVIEW
The Director, Product Engineering will be responsible for providing engineering leadership over a set/domain of digital products, for Royal Caribbean Group and all associated brands (e.g., Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, etc.). The director will lead several Sr. Managers/Managers, and their teams, in the engineering delivery of all products within their domain, in close collaboration with the various program/product executives, other engineering directors, the head of enterprise architecture and various technology leadership from throughout the corporation. In addition, this leader, in collaboration with the appropriate product director, will be accountable for the successful delivery of all of the digital products in their portfolio, including driving consistency, quality and alignment across our front-end development
teams.
The ideal candidate will have the unique super-hero ability of finding rare nuggets of wisdom through observation and data (e.g., see the forest through the trees) combined with a deep understanding engineering practices and principles to (a) drive change, (b) raise the level of excellence across her/his team(s) and (c) ensure horizontal impact across every engineering delivery team across her/his portfolio and beyond.
The director will be responsible for ensuring her/his teams adhere to (and/or aid in the creation of) the development of engineering standards, processes, libraries, components, and other tools necessary to deliver high quality, available and performant products. In addition, the ideal candidate serves, with her/his team, as one of the cutting-edge experts in emerging engineering and technical architecture capabilities, including new and emerging software, platforms, frameworks, operating systems and products, appropriately assessing the impact of emerging technology on the long-term roadmap for the corporation.
This candidate must have a deep understanding of the intersection of user centric product development and design with engineering technology, including (but not limited to) Web, mobile (native & hybrid), wearable technology. They will also be deeply in touch with cultural trends regarding how people are living and working with technology as well as an eye on the rapidly evolving digital landscape. He/she will also have a healthy understanding of giant corporate IT / technology, but a skillful approach to staying nimble and focused on making and delivering progressive, agile and flexible software products. They must be able to work with multiple product and project teams simultaneously, thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic environment and connect unexpected threads across disparate teams with a positive attitude. The role will provide direct leadership over the engineering leaders (sr. managers and managers) and lead the overall engineering effort of approximately 25-75 internal employees and external contractors, freelancers, and vendors as digital products and initiatives are developed and executed.
This leader requires the ability to direct, develop and build/hire teams that drive and execute engineering at a level of excellence and quality necessary for the successful
implementation of technology across the corporation and provide the right, advanced,
tools to help instrument and grow the engineering skills of the organization as a whole.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Overall portfolio leadership - Lead the engineering team/discipline, across all digital products and programs within her/his portfolio, to ensure that our digital products are successfully delivered, per our product roadmaps, and with the right level of expected quality
Engineering delivery - Leads the engineering team, working in very close partnership with the product leadership, to align engineering deliverables, roadmaps and improvements with the appropriate product and business roadmaps, including performance, resilience engineering
Development practices - Responsible for ensuring development teams are working from a central repository of common components and modules where possible to streamline production and ensure consistency and quality across multiple teams. This includes ensuring development teams working on web, iOS and Android all have similar processes and toolkits in place
Consistent Approach - Ensures developers across multiple product teams are all working in the same manner and with the same processes so that the entire group has the same set of expectations, operations, success metrics and philosophy
Nimble yet integrated - Works actively and in close partnership with the technology leadership across the corporation, including enterprise architecture, IT, quality assurance, platform & infrastructure engineering, etc. - to ensure our engineers are operating in a manner conducive to rapid iterations and releases that constantly push the upper limits of innovation, quality, and performance for our customers
Internal thought leadership - As a key leader over the product engineering discipline within the digital organization it will be important to educate, define, explain and in general share with partners across the entire organization how and why the way we approach front end engineering for digital products is not only following best practices in the industry but pushing beyond that to ensure everything we build is of the highest quality and in the most efficient manner.
Forward thinking - Lead the engineering discipline to stay ahead of ever evolving engineering best practices and ensure consistent application of those best practices across the delivery organization, including leading the implementation and management of continuous improvement practices and continue advancement of new platforms and emerging technology
Personnel management: Responsible for all aspects of personnel management (e.g., hiring, training and development, etc.) of her/his direct reports
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelors, Computer Science or equivalent
Minimum of 5-10 years in an engineering leadership role
Minimum of 10 years hands-on engineering / coding roles
Bachelors with a focus on Computer Science or equivalent degree required, with a MS/MBA or other relevant advanced degree preferred
Significant experience in leading large engineering teams/organizations in bringing high quality digital products to market, while managing the quality of engineering across diverse teams and locations
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
The ideal candidate will possess a combination of technology and leadership skills at the
enterprise level. This role requires that the candidate have a proven track record of
leading development projects through complex organizations with a mix of emerging
and legacy technology. In addition, the candidate will require a proven track record of
leading large teams through ideation, design and delivery of complex consumer-facing
products.
Product & delivery depth:
3+ years of experience leading software development team(s) of at least 20+ engineers, enforcing architectural principles, identifying, and selecting design patterns, mentoring less experienced team members
5+ years of experience building complex mobile applications following various mobile architectures for iOS and/or Android platforms, using native, hybrid or cross-platform paradigms for at least 1M active users implemented in Swift, Objective-C, Kotlin, Java, JavaScript.
3+ years of experience developing Web application using best practices with HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, Angular and ReactJS
3+ year of experience developing server side (REST based) applications using microservices and distributed systems architectures/frameworks (Springboot or/and Lagom) with Java, Kotlin, Node.js, GoLang
Strong understanding of mobile platforms, release practices, mobile device capabilities such performance, memory footprint and notification frameworks. Experience with databases (such as SQLite, MySQL, Cassandra, Couchbase, Realm), message brokers (preferred KAFKA)
Practical knowledge of cloud technologies: AWS preferred - Route53, ELB, EC2 (incl. reserved instances), S3, RDS, CloudFront, Elasticache, AutoScaling, Lambda, cost optimization
Strong understanding of application testability, reliability, availability, monitoring and security
Familiarity with test automation frameworks such as Selenium and Appium
Familiarity with Kubernetes and related sub-components
Good understanding of Containers (preferred: Docker), Ci/CD (preferred: Jenkins, ArgoCD), Dependency Management and Build Automation Tools (preferred Maven, Gradle, Helm), Version Control Systems (preferred: Git and associated workflows), API Management
