Job Description
The Opportunity
Operational Risk Management is an independent risk function which seeks to provide assurances to a variety of stakeholders that enterprise risks are appropriately managed and in alignment with risk appetite. The Operational Risk Management department is responsible for providing independent oversight of policies, procedures and standards concerning the measurement, monitoring, control, and reporting of risks.
Reporting to the Head of Global Functions ORM, this Director role works closely with the first line of defense business team and senior leaders to ensure that MBPS is effectively managing risk. The role facilitates and promotes risk awareness, identification, rating, monitoring, and mitigation activities for MBPS, ensuring adherence to the Company's Operational Risk Management Programs and Standards (such as the Risk and Control Self-Assessment, Incident Management, Change Initiatives, etc.).
The role requires pragmatic business judgment, technical subject matter expertise in risk management, and highly effective communication and influencing skills with staff and management and will encompass a variety of risk activities
Key Accountabilities:
Provide second line of defense oversight for Group Functions by probing, challenging, and assessing risk through application of risk expertise, strong relationship management and critical thinking skills
Function in an advisory capacity to provide support to leadership and staff to improve risk assessment skills, raise enterprise risk awareness and promote a healthy risk culture.
Develop and maintain key risk reporting, providing analysis and insights for key stakeholders.
Contribute to initiative success by considering a risk-based approach and organizational priorities, and by facilitating risk discussions and informed decision-making in line with risk appetite.
Collaborate with Global and Segment risk colleagues, Internal Audit, Compliance and Information Security Risk to provide effective and complementary risk oversight while sharing relevant information.
Lead and support a variety of risk management activities, including risk assessments and evolving risk identification and management.
Make recommendations for control and process improvements.
Take actions to foster a strong risk-awareness culture, including prepara tion and presentation of employee education programs.
Escalate risk concerns as required.
Ensure alignment with Manulife Financial group policies and best practices.
Qualifications:
Broad knowledge of financial services/insurance business and related products
In-depth subject matter expertise in Operational Risk Management(second line of defense, minimum 5-7 years of experience) with strong knowledge of operational processes, identification and assessment of risks and controls
Strong working knowledge of risk management tools, techniques, and methodologies
Excellent written and oral communication skills, specifically the ability to clearly articulate and write key risks and controls
Highly effective interpersonal skills with an ability to negotiate, influence and collaborate for shared success and to build relationships with key partners and stakeholders
Detail-oriented with excellent analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills with the ability to think strategically
Self-starter with ability to work independently
Confidence and ability to interact with and present to senior management with a high degree of credibility and
High proficiency in MS Office Products - Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Visio and other analytics tools is a plus
