Job Overview
 
We are seeking a meticulous and detail-oriented Book Copy Editor to join our publishing team. The ideal candidate will have a strong command of the English language, expertise in editorial standards, and the ability to polish manuscripts while maintaining the author's voice. This role involves editing for grammar, punctuation, syntax, style, and consistency while ensuring adherence to house style and industry standards.
 
Key Responsibilities
Edit book manuscripts for grammar, punctuation, spelling, clarity, and consistency.
Ensure all work adheres to The Chicago Manual of Style, 18th edition, while applying knowledge of other style guides (e.g., AP, MLA, APA) as needed.
Fact-check for accuracy and verify references, citations, and quotations where required.
Collaborate with project managers to maintain the integrity and vision of the manuscript.
Address queries and provide constructive feedback to authors and other contributors.
Stay updated on language trends, style standards, and publishing best practices.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in English.
Proven experience in book editing or a related field.
Mastery of the English language with a keen eye for detail and consistency.
In-depth knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style, 18th edition and familiarity with other style guides.
Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams.
Proficiency in standard editing software and tools (e.g., Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat).
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in a publishing environment.
Familiarity with different genres and formats, including fiction, nonfiction, and technical writing.
Knowledge of inclusive language and sensitivity to diverse audiences.
