Job Purpose
This position will be responsible for conducting breeding trials in the field, research in the lab and train the manpower of partners of the IRRI-PPP project. Under the guidance of the Supervisor, develop breeding strategies for partners, develop protocol and all breeding and project related activities.
Roles and Responsibilities
Purpose
Contribute to the development and implementation of Private Partners research including reviewing related literature and providing logistical support
Exchange conceptual ideas with collaborating partners and seek feedback
Coordinate with collaborating partners on their research requirements
Verify suggested methodologies and establish parameters
Select adequate research tools and equipment
Assist in the identification of research technicians and assign tasks/responsibilities
Coordinate the required services and supplies for rice breeding activities
Engagement
Provide technical assistance and guidelines to partners and project staff on implementation of experiment(s) including the logistics
Assign, monitor and evaluate partners research activities/tasks performed by Researchers, Research Technicians and contract workers; provide guidance when necessary
Maintain smooth relationship with partners and fostering a productive teamwork environment
Assist in developing standard research protocol
Summarize and validate data using appropriate advanced statistical tools independently
Assist in the interpretation of results in relation to laboratory experiments
Make recommendations for further research
Assure maintenance of accurate data recording and update database for efficient storage and retrieval of information
Delivery
Summarize research findings and draft manuscripts for publication in refereed journals
Take part in developing suitable rice breeding strategies in close coordination with the partners Molecular experts and breeders
Lead in the development of training materials and provide training in breeding to the partners field research officers
Contribute in preparing annual progress reports for the project
Prepare posters and papers for presentation at local and international conferences
Draft training material using readily available published information (i.e. protocols, methodology)
Prepare necessary supply; identify resource persons; make sure that the logistics are appropriate for defined purpose
Supervise the work of research officer and research technicians
Carry out performance appraisals of research officer/research technicians
Contribute to the professional development of research officer/research technicians
Qualifications
Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Science with specialization in Genetics and Breeding and 4 years of relevant work experience in modern breeding methodologies and breeding informatics
Master of Science degree in Genetics and Breeding and 2 year relevant work experience in modern breeding methodologies and breeding informatics
A PhD degree in Breeding, molecular breeding, Genetics and experience of working with an international organizations will be given preference
Skills Required
Has proven technical proficiency in conducting breeding research experiments
Experience working on inbred and hybrid rice varietal development
Has strong oral and written communication skills
Has strong analytical skills
Has some experience with quality assurance
Has some experience with research management
Has good presentation skills
Has excellent computer skills
