About IRRI
The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is dedicated to reducing poverty and hunger through rice science; improving the health and welfare of rice farmers and consumers; and protecting the rice-growing environment for future generations. IRRI is an independent, nonprofit, research and educational institute, founded in 1960 by the Ford and Rockefeller foundations with support from the Philippine government. The institute, headquartered in Los Baños, Philippines, has offices in 17 rice-growing countries in Asia and Africa, and over 1,000 staff.
Working with in-country partners, IRRI develops advanced rice varieties that yield more grain and better withstand pests and disease as well as flooding, drought, and other harmful effects of climate change.
Job Purpose
Climate Change impacts rice production through exacerbated and more frequent climate extremes. At the same time rice fields are a large emitter of greenhouse gasses while technologies that reduce the carbon footprint in rice fields have significant differences of impacts among rice ecosystems. The greenhouse gas emission (GHGE) from rice fields has large spatial and temporal variations because of the small heterogeneities in biophysics environments and agronomic management. It is a big challenge to estimate the GHGE from rice fields up to regional, national, and global scales. Moreover, there is limited information in the global reduction potentials of GHGE associated with appropriately improved agronomic management practices. Working with various national and international partners, data cross global rice production is expected to be collected for a reliable analysis on the estimation of global total GHGE and reduction potentials. This task needs a concerted approach from an interdisciplinary team of experts.
Under the supervision of the IRRI environment and crop modeling group, and support of colleagues in collaborating research groups inside and outside of IRRI, the Agricultural AI Data Analyst will be responsible for data collection from multiple sources and data analyses with modern and traditional methods to generate meaningful outputs on national, regional, and global GHGE. The AI Data Analytic specialist will also be responsible for managing and updating databases and providing analyses of information to support the implementation of IRRI's agricultural and climate change projects. Furthermore, the position will provide support for management and analyses of project/research data sets and research support where necessary and will be involved in the routine activities of research projects under the environment and crop modeling group.
This position will be based at the IRRI Headquarters, Los Baños, Philippines and may only be filled by permanent citizens of the Philippines.
Roles and Responsibilities
Coordinate data collection, compilation and management from multiple sources such as research partners, available databases, literature, etc.
Develop and implement systems for data quality control for research purposes using traditional and modern data analysis methods
Conduct training on the use of the developed database systems and data analytics tools
Organize collected data into a database system and develop an interoperable system for data import and export
Select, develop, and compose appropriate traditional (environment and crop modeling) and modern (AI) data analysis technologies to build advanced analytics systems
Conduct data analysis with the built analysis system to achieve research goals including, but not limited to, visualization tools (e.g. GIS tool) to identify the hot-spot of GHGE and advanced intervention packages for GHGE reduction in rice fields
Contribute to the development of data analysis reports
Support the group activities
Take the responsibility of assigned tasks from supervisor and research projects
Engage with project staff and research partners on the data collection and management
Coordinate with project' staff in the preparation of progress and annual reports.
Assist the environment and crop modeling research relative groups in preparing different types of reports and documents as required
Assist in facilitating mid-term and end-of-term project review
Assist in facilitating the organization of and participating in different seminars, conferences and coordination meetings to gather information
Assist in facilitating the organization of training courses associated with research activities
Design and develop the data collection, quality control, assimilation, and management system
Design and develop the AI and crop modeling integrated data analysis system
