Assistant General Counsel
Job Summary
Thomson Reuters is hiring a labor and employment counsel. The individual will counsel on employment issues globally, except for those in the United States, with an emphasis on matters for Reuters News. This is a global role which can be based in Mexico, Poland, India, or Manila.

Major Responsibilities/Accountabilities
Oversee all labor and employment disputes, litigation and inquiries or investigations by labor regulators, outside of the United States
Select and oversee outside counsel around the world and manage outside counsel spend
Implement, monitor, and enforce best practices as to non-staff contributors (freelancers) including developing and presenting training as required
Manage initiatives including reduction/conversion of Reuters freelance journalists within project timelines and budget, working closely with global and regional colleagues in HR and Finance
Conduct, guide or lead internal investigations into employment-related matters, including potential noncompliance with Thomson Reuters' code of conduct, and work with management to identify resolutions and courses of action
Oversee or participate in trade union and works council negotiations and dispute resolution
Support HR and managers on day-to-day employee and labor relations issues outside of the U.S. including advising on labor and employment policies and practices
Ensure compliance with the Trust Principles, which reflect Reuters' commitment to integrity, independence, and freedom from bias
Monitor and advise on the impact of new or impending legislation globally, outside the United States
Reports to the General Counsel, Employment & Labor, based in New York and works closely with the US in-house employment law team and more broadly with the lawyers in the General Counsel's Office, as well as with Global and Regional colleagues in HR and Finance
Scope & Impact
Responsible for all labor and employment issues across the organization, except the United States. Counsel senior editorial, commercial and operational leaders on labor and employment laws around the world, handle employment disputes of all types, including litigation, and develop policies and procedures to reduce risk and cost and strengthen the business.
Mandatory Skills & Experience
Significant post-qualification experience in private practice or as in-house counsel, with a focus on labor and employment law
Ability to communicate with diverse professionals and employees including journalists and lawyers across diverse geographies and cultures
Can work as an effective in-house lawyer, giving clear, practical, and commercial legal advice that empowers the business and supports Reuters to report the news and meet the needs of its customers
Deep understanding of Reuters core values of independence, integrity, and freedom from bias
Ability to thrive working independently and as part of a diverse, global team
Strong work ethic with ability to prioritize and meet deadlines and demands in a fast-paced environment
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
High level of integrity and professionalism
Must be able to work UK hours
Desirable Skills & Experience
Experience advising clients in the news and media industry
Understanding of copyright and intellectual property laws
Written and verbal communication skills in additional languages
Certification/Education
Law degree and current practicing lawyer.
