A healthcare assistant, also known as a nursing assistant, is a healthcare professional who works under the supervision of registered nurses or other healthcare professionals to provide basic care for patients. They typically work in hospitals, nursing homes, or other healthcare facilities. The duties of a healthcare assistant may include assisting with patient hygiene, such as bathing and dressing, feeding patients who cannot feed themselves, taking patients' vital signs, and providing emotional support to patients and their families. In addition, healthcare assistants may be responsible for maintaining patient records, transporting patients to and from various areas of the facility, and assisting with medical procedures such as catheterization or wound care. To be successful in this role, healthcare assistants must have strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well as a compassionate and caring demeanor. They must be able to work well under pressure and in fast-paced environments, as well as follow instructions and protocols accurately. Many healthcare assistant positions require a high school diploma or equivalent, as well as completion of a training program or certification course.
